Co-creation of the Lacandona Forest as a Sustainable and Market Ready Destination.
In the last 5 years, ecotourism has had an annual growth of 65% at the international level and it is estimated that 20% at the national level, that is, it grows 4 to 5 times faster than conventional tourism, causing 4 out of 10 tourists to seek ecotourism experiences. Chiapas receives more than 5 million tourists and visitors a year, of which 64% express that they are looking for experiences of nature and adventure. These trends, properly managed, represent an opportunity to strengthen sustainable livelihoods and the conservation of the Lacandon Forest.
From years of efforts, collaboration and construction of social processes with key actors in the region, the need arises to approach tourism with a vision of destination.
The co-creation of the Lacandon Jungle as a Sustainable Tourist Destination is a process designed with the aim of contributing to the conservation of bio-cultural diversity as well as boosting the economy of one of the most biodiverse regions of the country, through the generation of income, jobs and markets, linked to different regional productive chains.
