We stayed in their cabins and did the four day tradition and culture tour. My family of two adults and three school-aged children had a great time! The tour is a fantastic way to see this part of the country. In fact, I wouldn’t have been able to do it if not through this tour. The roads are windy and narrow and therefore hard to get to. Our tour guide for each day also drove us and each of the three were safe drivers. We learned about indigenous history, saw beautiful sights on hikes and saw works of art. The tour guides Jesus, Paco and Toribio were all friendly, knowledgeable and patient with the kids. I wish the tour had more physical activity but maybe they weren’t sure what we were capable of with the kids. Prior to our tour, I asked so many questions through WhatsApp about how to get from Queretaro and what to pack, etc. and I was always answered promptly and helpfully, which makes it so much easier to get to Jalpan de Serra, your base for the tour. It’s a 4-5 hour bus ride from Queretaro to Jalpan de Serra. The cabins were fine. They are clean and enough but not luxury hotels. Sometimes you can hear cars passing in the street. You get extra blankets which we needed at night but no heater. There is air conditioning and fans for when it is hotter. Also about a 20 minute walk into town center. Not that big of a deal for us but maybe for others.

We had the most wonderful 3 day tour with Sierra Gorda Ecotours (The Best of Sierra Gorda). Our guide and driver, Esteban was so knowledgeable about every aspect of the area: the nature, the history, the architecture and the local life and culture. He was attentive, but also knew when to give us some space, and by the end he felt like a friend, whose company we enjoyed. We sampled a lot of delicious local cuisine, including food cooked by restaurants supported by Sierra Gorda Ecotours. The area is really stunning, and the accommodation was perfect for a visit to the countryside. We were also really pleased that a portion of what we paid goes to help the local community. We will always remember some of the very special experiences we had with Esteban and Sierra Gorda Ecotours. Thank you to them.

Our four day tour was stunningly beautiful and fun. Our local guide Jesus Castillo Rios was kind and patient, and was excellent; also a safe driver in rain, fog, and on hairpin turns. He spoke English, and was knowledgeable about history, and the natural phenomena, (trees, birds, plants, geology and rivers.) We especially loved walking through the Puente de Dios. We stayed in the eco tour company's lodge in Jalpan. It's clean and comfortable but don't expect frills. The cabins are set in a lovely, quiet environment, and were built using straw as insolation. SG Eco tours uses some of your fees to support small economic initiatives in the region (such as restaurants and a fish farm.) In January it's a bit chilly but the great thing is we had all the sights to ourselves. Loved it. (We are retired, in our 60s.)

Very beautiful sierra sceneries. If you get lucky you may see some wild horses like we did.
