Rarámuri trails: community experiences from the territory

BlogUncategorized ' Rarámuri trails: community experiences from the territory

In the Sierra Tarahumara, walking is not just a way of getting around. For the Rarámuri people, walking is deeply linked to daily life, social organization and the spiritual relationship with the territory. From this understanding is born Rarámuri Community Trails, a co-design initiative that starts with a process of listening, dialogue and collective construction with the communities.

The initiative seeks to understand how communities feel about tourism, The program is based on a participatory approach, recognizing their previous experiences, learning and concerns, and respecting their right to decide how they wish to participate.

A community process rather than a tourist product

Senderos Comunitarios Rarámuri is being developed within the framework of the strengthening of the Creel-Barrancas del Cobre Corridor, driven by the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of the State of Chihuahua, The objective is to diversify the tourist offer and generate greater local benefits.

However, the project's approach moves away from predefined models. It does not propose a single route or a compulsory route, but rather the identification of sections of community experiences, These may operate independently and, only when there is an agreement, articulate with other communities.

This approach recognizes that:

  • Participation must be based on consent, clarity and trust.
  • Each community has a different relationship with tourism.
  • There are previous experiences that have left lessons learned and also tensions.

Communities, experiences and own decisions

The process has involved visits and dialogues with various Rarámuri communities in the region, including San Luis de Majimachi and Mirador de Oteros, Mogótavo, Bacajípare and Mesa de Guitayvo, as well as other communities with independent tourism experiences.

In each case, the starting point has been the following listen:

  • What experiences have they had with tourism.
  • What type of activities they wish to share.
  • Under what conditions they would feel comfortable participating.

The experiences explored include interpretive hikes, traditional gastronomy, handicrafts, ancestral medicine and community coexistence, always understood as local proposals, not as standardized products.

Contribution of Market Ready Tourism and La Mano del Mono

From The Monkey's Hand, through Market Ready Tourism, The accompaniment of the project is based on the experience accumulated in previous community-based tourism processes in Mexico and Latin America, as well as on the project Rarámuri experiences.

The role is not to design a closed product, but rather to facilitating reflection, analysis and informed decision making processes, by placing the voice of the communities at the center. This implies:

  • Actively listen to the community's feelings about tourism.
  • Learning from past experiences.
  • Analyze the social, environmental and market feasibility of each possible experience.

Based on this work, we explore the possibility of intercommunity experience sections, only in those cases where there is explicit consent, clear agreements and shared benefits.

Tourism as a complementary activity to livelihoods

A key principle of the project is that tourism do not replace existing livelihoods, but rather that it be integrated in a complementary manner. Agriculture for self-consumption, handicrafts, community organization and cultural cycles continue to be the axis of Rarámuri life.

Therefore, the process considers fundamental aspects such as:

  • Water availability and care.
  • Waste management.
  • Actual community operation capabilities.
  • Own decision-making rhythms.

The objective is to avoid community overload and to ensure that any tourism experience strengthens - and does not weaken - local organization.

Alliances for tourism with a territorial approach

The development of the project is carried out in collaboration with strategic allies such as Chihuahua Tourism, Visit Chihuahua Y Copper Canyon Park, articulating institutional efforts with grassroots community processes.

These alliances make it possible to move towards a more decentralized model of tourism that recognizes communities as a key element in the development of a more sustainable tourism model. decision makers and not only as service providers.

A living process, built step by step towards regenerative tourism

Senderos Comunitarios Rarámuri is not a finished trail. It is a live process, The company's approach, which moves at the pace of communities and places listening, respect and consent at the center.

Rather than measuring success in terms of kilometers traveled, the project focuses on the depth of relationships built, understanding that walking the territory also implies learning to stop, dialogue and decide collectively.es.

Senderos Comunitarios Rarámuri is an example of how tourism can become a tool for the development of the Rarámuri community. cultural reconnection, territorial justice and regeneration, when it is designed based on listening, cultural relevance and respect for community rhythms.

More than just a tourist product, this project is an invitation to walking with the territory, The program is designed to help visitors recognize the depth of Rarámuri knowledge and build experiences that leave a positive mark on both visitors and inhabitants of the Sierra Tarahumara.
