ABOUT AJAW ITZá COMMUNITY GUIDE COMMITTEE, SAN JOSÉ, PETéN.
Ajaw Itzá offers community-based tourism in San José, Petén, where local guides share Mayan heritage, history and nature.
Ajaw Itza is an initiative operated by the Tourism Committee - Ajaw Itzá Community Guides, a group of residents of San José, Petén, descendants of the Itzá Mayan culture. These community guides are guardians of their ancestral legacy and share their traditions, history and the region's natural environment with visitors. The community offers authentic community-based tourism experiences, allowing tourists to immerse themselves in local life and customs.
Located on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá, San José is a destination that combines history, nature and living culture. Its inhabitants, with a strong link to their Maya past, maintain their customs and offer warm hospitality to travelers. Activities include guided tours of important attractions in the municipality, such as the archaeological site of Motul, known as "Sitio IK", which stands out for its glyph representing the wind. In addition, visitors have the opportunity to interact with the Itzaes grandparents, who share their ancestral wisdom.
Another attraction is the local handicrafts, with products made by residents using traditional techniques. You can also take boat rides on Lake Petén Itzá, observing the local biodiversity, or explore Cerro Tzunuun, a natural viewpoint that offers spectacular views.
San José, founded in 1697, has dedicated itself to the preservation of its heritage and the promotion of its cultural identity through tourism. With Ajaw Itzá, visitors not only discover the essence of the Itzá Mayan culture, but also participate in a model of responsible tourism that promotes community development and the preservation of the natural and cultural environment of Petén.
